wired.com— It's been celebrated as a muse and banned as a poison. Now an obsessed microbiologist has cracked the code for absinthe - and distilled his own.

i tried some unofficial brand here in canada (hills absinth) it was actually pretty good and you do get a different type of drunk off it. And if your a beer drinker trying this stuff 2 shots is avg and 3 shots will totally wreck you. If your a vodka drinker id set the limit at 4 within the 1st 2-4 hours and then 1/hour at most after if you feel the need (not likely). The preperation is very cool but im not sure what this 'absinth effect' is supposed to be. I guess Ill have to wait until I travel to europe one day.
I've only had absinthe once, and it was a bit of a letdown. It basically turned a room of 5 guys into slobbering, docile, and eventually slumbering idiots. I suppose this effect would be lessened over time - the body would adapt to it (like any other drug). Personally I found it an interesting experience, but not something I'd like to indulge in frequently. Damn absinthe.
> psychoactive chemical (thujone) present in > wormwood Since this guy really hasn't bothered to explain the brain chemistry that might make thujone psychotropic (beyond, say, the effects that profound deprivation such as severe dehydration or starvation might induce), you'll pardon me if I view the whole Absinthe thing with a bit of skepticism. Wikipedia, of course, say "It is now believed that it antagonizes inhibition in the gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) receptor system.", but that's hardly scientific proof.... I especially like the fact that they don't quote any scientific studies to back that statement up.Beyond that, the whole kidney failure and liver toxicity thing is a pretty big turn off for armature batches that might be a little heavy on the thujone. Might as well just smoke a little pot with it and even the ride out (if there is any "ride" to be had).
Yes it does give you a similar feeling of drunk, but, wormwood does not make you tired like alcohol. Not that it keeps you up, but you will outlast your friends :)
OK.There are alot of Articles on this topicMy name is Mike I am an Agent for the ATF Second Quarter Division or to you civilians the Illegal Substance Task ForceI have had many run ins with Absinthe,I must say it is my favorite drink,I like the fact that it is Green and all the history it has behind it.You can easily Hallucinate(Apologies for spelling,Long night) it's not just the extract from the Wormwood but also the Armenia,Anise and Fennel mixed with the percentage of Alch% Level that makes for what we here in the Field call a small "Mushroom Trip" but very Small,it is so small that it is distinguished as a drunk, but given the right type of person,it can be used as a placebo and the person can experience up to a 4 hour trip. There so many diff rent types of Absinthe and if you have not gone to Denmark than chances are you will not have the full force of the Green Fairy.Take it from me someone who has been in the line of work and from someone who has had the real Green Fairy in Eastern Amsterdam, the Black Bottle they called it,when it comes out it is glowing green..I think it was 185% Ashil Level,Serious stuff..You will get less the effect, way less as a matter of fact due to the fact that everything shipped from Europe is also Distilled...Anything is possible with the human mind..So any of you wanting the same thing as Euro trip,Go to Amsterdam,You want to try Absinthe and try all of there types and sooner or later "Trip" go ahead because nothing is impossible..Nice post though,I digg it

It's interesting to see a scientific approach to the contents of absinthe as it does have a lots of myths surrounding it.

Yeah, I did straight shots of it... three! The burn is quite unique... to say the least. But Prague became alive that night.

Latest episode of Diggnation had a discussion of absinthe, sounds like they hadn't read the Wired article.
