blog.scifi.com — That's because it's a touchscreen you don't even need to touch, instead relying on sensors to be controlled from up to 6 inches away. Just wave your hand near it and it'll understand your gesture and translate it into a command. It's designed for medical use, but it'll be interesting to see what consumer applications this makes

What I find interested in that it looks like the new wave in computer in the next few years will be around usability, with touchscreen and such. Well it was about time. The processors aren't getting any faster. We needed a new focus, a new transformation in the computer world...

It looks like it would be really cool if you were putting on a presentation or something of that manner, but otherwise I don't see a good home use for it yet.

I'd imagine for a system like that to be useful you'd need an "initialization" gesture, to tell the system "hi, I'm a human and I'm ready to input information". Especially as they're really pushing capacitive technology reaching out that far from the screen (we're talking about changes in the picofarad range; I've seen capacitive sensor chips claim femtofarad resolution).By mapping out the capacitance of your hand at a range, it can determine the difference between your hand and the background noise of the sensor, and actually report accurate gestures. And your lil kitty won't be able to delete your $38 billion dollar file.

Something like this would be great for videogames. You could play wireless tennis and boxing, just by moving your hands, maybe even a round of golf! [edit] Oh, nevermind, I saw one at Target at lunchtime.

Wanted: 3x sense of humour reattachments.I know medical doesn't automatically mean surgery, it was an attempt at a joke. Granted not a funny one but jeez, learn to tell the difference.

The machines at my hospital, where I work, already have touchless screens. They're the old CRT screens from the 90's and the new LCD touch screens are a pain in the ass compared to them. You have to almost bang on the screen and they get all messy compared to the no touch ones.
