I'm a structural engineer here in Chile. Everything is built with quakes in mind... it was good to see only 3 medium buildings went down.

i live in Santiago, Chile, official news say it was 8.8 near Talcahuano (a small city), here in Santiago it was 8.0 in the Richter scale. Most of the damage seen in the news are because of old buildings that were not prepared for such shock, and also it happened at 3:38 am, so it caught many people in their sleep and could get to a safe place in time.I'm glad to say that history has tought us well, there have been lots of earthquakes, so building regulations have been very strict in order to withstand this kinds of shock. Every person is extremely well educated on what to do in cases of emergency, and i'm extremely proud of that. Our government is very well prepared to deal with this, and all efforts are being use to divert this disaster. As a clear example, the building that i live in stood the quake very well, absolutely no structural damage, also the hole community kept very calm and evacuated the building in a very orderly way, very sleek. The great part of roads are clear, energy is restoring, internet is up, and phones are mostly working. Considering the impact, my country was very well prepared.

Thanks ChileanGoD.And buffalogums, I'm pretty aware of where the countries are. In fact, I stated "I know it's pretty far away..." I was asking because there were tsunami warnings all up the coast as far away as Hawaii.
