encyclopedia.quickseek.com— You've got to see this, it's pretty amazing. And I don't use that word lightly on Digg. Just check out the shockwave over that water, too cool.

f**k off, Graves138!We don't have any guns on ships larger than 5" anymore. I don't believe we use any artillery, land-based, larger than 155mm. The Yamato, a Japanese battleship in WWII supposedly had 20" guns.Your comment was evidence of your ignorance and desire to push an agenda without the necessary knowledge to back it up.Idiot.
The humorous part of this pyrotechnic display is that all battleship guns are next to useless when it comes to killing bad guys. They are there to give a boost of confidence to the marines in the boat across the water who are about to run ashore and start catching bull. None of that 40s era ordinance can touch the effectiveness of a cruise missile .

At the time, they were firing at Lebanon after the US Marine barracks had been attacked and 900 Marines killed.

@Streettech:Not a carrier, but an Amphibious Assault Ship. It's the USS New Orleans (LPH-11). There's an 11 on the foredeck. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USS_New_Orleans_%28LPH-11%29figured it out from this flickr photoset: http://www.flickr.com/photos/telstar/44904834/in/set-56935/

How exactly could a broadside of all 9 guns move the ship *at all*?Each shell weighs 2700 pounds. 9 of them together weigh 24,300 lbs. I don't care with what force you throw those, it won't move a 124,120,000 lb. ship sitting in the water. It won't even heel to the side. The math: http://www.navweaps.com/index_tech/tech-022.htm
