arstechnica.com — The second release candidate of KDE 4 was issued earlier this week. Ars takes a look at the feature set and finds plenty to like along with some nasty, hair-sprouting warts. Is one month enough time for the devs to wield the scalpel?

"how long is it going to be btw?""Hard to say, because it depends on a number of things being finished on Amarok and KDE for windows.Amarok doesn't have a release date set, but the aim is to get an alpha out there sometime after KDE 4 is released, and take it from there.I would hope the Windows release wouldn't be too long after the Linux release (possibly the same time depending on how the beta process goes). We don't want to rush this, there's no point putting buggy software out there, because it doesn't help the users and just makes Amarok and KDE look bad. It's better to have to wait a bit longer and end up with a high quality release."So amarok is still in a pre-alpha state for windows is still at least a couple of months away :(<a class="user" href="http://amarok.kde.org/blog/">http://amarok.kde.org/blog/</a><a class="user" href="http://amarok.kde.org/wiki/Development/Win32">http://amarok.kde.org/wiki/Development/Win32</a>

By that litmus test, E17 should have been released three years ago.

In my mind, KDE 4.0 is equivalent to OS X 10.0. Both are really rough around the edges, and both represent a massively needed shift in the underlying technology.

It lasted about 10 minutes before I gave up and removed every trace of it. There is still a lot of work to be done to be done with it before I can consider it useful for my desktop.
