Why would you buy a $5000 notebook? You could buy both a powerful desktop and an ultraportable notebook for that price. That's what I'd do if I had $5000 to spend on a computer.
Then send it off to laptopdesignusa.com for the custom work...$169 per customized laptop...How much are the OEM's jacking the price for the same thing?
While I agree there is a point one must make here. An Alienware is an exceptional piece of hardware both in performance and Aesthetics. Each cable inside is custom sized and cut to fit exactly, allowing for greater airflow. There are other things that raise it and others like Falcon Northwest above the average.
I don't know why people are bashing dell so much. I agree the tech support that comes out of India is piss poor. I have worked at fortune 500 company that deploy Dell PC's and laptop's for 15,000+ people.Hardly ever hear any complaints. At home I have a XPS Gen 5 desktop with all name brand components and never had an issue once. I also have a XPS laptop with top of the line components inside as well.Working here for the past 5 years and how we update our computers every 2 years I am really impressed of the quality of computers we continue to get.
I don't know why they are bashing either of them. I used to spec build my own PCs and enjoyed it while saving money. Now that I'm making more money I chose to spec an Alienware system rather then spend my leisure time searching for best prices then installing/building/configuring etc.. the system. Not to mention the potential hassle of being shipped a bad part and dealing with sending it back and being delayed. I also know the system was bench marked and I received I nice folder with plenty of support/hardware information etc.. I also never had one single issue with this system...not one.The company I work for also uses Dell desktops as well as mostly Dell servers on the back-end they have proven far more reliable then other brands. In addition, getting updates that are appropriate to your system is as easy. Go to their support website and type in the service tag found on the unit itself and every update applicable to your system is displayed and easily accessible. Looking for something more specific is no problem either as it also has some filtration features. You can also check warranty status, guides, manuals etc.. from this part of the site.In addition, their technical support is top notch. I deal with a lot of different vendors and Dell is one of the best from my experience. Never had a problem they couldn't resolve. One time we had a hardware failure that required replacing the motherboard and they had it shipped and a technician on-site to install it in under 4 hours. Of course we purchased Gold premium support for our servers and I do hear that the free support that comes with purchase isn't so hot but show me company that has excellent free support these days. You get what you pay for.

ChaosIncarnate: He's talking about a notebook. Good luck cobbling together one of those.
