macnewbie.wordpress.com — This blog is written by a Windows veteran, a Mac newbie, describing his switch to Mac from Windows. It's both slightly technical and very technical, ranging from IM clients to setting up PHP/MySQL.Worth a read, especially for people considering a switch.

>This site seems to be turning into macdigg.comi think what you see is the result of a couple things. first, there are more macs out there than anyone gives credit. the whole market share vs. installed base thing. second, mac people have more time because macs have a distinct productivity advangage.

"The main features touted in Vista have been in OS X for years. Your operating system is not superior; it is delayed and still years behind."While not the best way to phrase it (IMHO), this is true to a point. "the main features touted in OS X have been on xp (made by third parties) for years"I don't really know what features you speak of, but I am not familiar with them nor are they ones that I am particularly interested in. As some one who has to run a few of every system for work related projects, the features that I tend to want to see are all about a stable environment for business. Windows has been slacking badly. Lets take a look at just four of the features they have been spouting that will help those in business and home (there are lots more, but for length I'm only mentioning 4).Vectoring. Apple, KDE, and Gnome have supported vectoring for years. Adobe, Gimp and most photo creators have supported it for years. Vista will be the first windows OS to /fully/ support it native, and it takes more processing power then any other desktop environment (just one reason for the insane hardware requirements).Journaling. Again the Apple and Linux world has had this for years. EXT3 is still one of the most popular file systems world wide. While NTFS technically supports it, NTFS only does so under very special circumstances and it doesn't do it very well (I simplified it for length, there is tons of info on google). Journaling is very important to what I do, and MS may not even release the new FS until SP1 for Vista!Enhanced Command Line. I know a bunch of people are immediately going to say something like "command line is outdated" or " I never use it anyway" or some other BS. The people that will say this have experienced very little the power of the Command Line. While I wish it was a bit more powerful and had the ability to spawn multiple sessions, Apple still has a good command line (if apple has the ability to host multiple terminals, I am unaware of it). A Windows prompt cant even do simple piping, and redirecting is pretty much worthless. As an Admin in the real world, having the ability to quickly connect to machines remotely, find information, and redirect it to a usable file is a huge plus. Until then, cygwin gets installed on every windows machine! Here's another example.A raise of hands for ANYONE who has had their GUI lock up, no matter what OS you were using.*watch 99.999999% of people raise their hands*A raise of hands for those on Linux that switched to a terminal, killed the run away process and never had to reboot.*watch the Linux guys raise their hands*how many had to restart their system and lose all that they were working on?*watch the windows guys all raise hands*If done right Microsoft's MSSH (MSSHell) has a good shot at being a VERY useful tool that will help everyone regardless of what they do. I really hope that their hype on this is as good as they say it is.Service Restarting. Windows Vista is FINALLY going to support being able to update itself. and install programs by only restarting the services affected! What a brilliant idea! Too bad that's been in the *nix world since...well since there was a *nix! How many Linux users have to reboot their machine for a product installation/update? Anyone? That's what I thought...I don't mean to rant or sound like an ass, but can someone tell me a single feature that Vista will have that ISN'T already supported by another OS? Is there ANY originality to Vista?*as a side note, when in the world will Windows ship with a decent server program other the telnet? For the Love! Give us admins FTP, SSH, ANYTHING with better security then telnet!! Cygwin is a great product, but I am getting tired of using Linux on a Windows box to get the programs and functionality that all Admins deserve!!

I had a journey to Linux. There were three problems.1. RTFM almost everywhere. yeah the answer is not 42. the answer is always RTFM.2. I had hard time to enable Hangul typing.3. Those IE-only websites. Shame on cyworld.comSo I'm back to Windows with a lot of viruses and spywares and blah blah.
