sojones.com — Ask Don 'Moose' Lewis, commissioner of The All-American Basketball Alliance. Lewis wants to set up 'whites only' basketball league which is set to start in 12 cities this summer. It also bans players born outside of the U.S. Why exactly?

It's only illegal for white people. I have many clients that are non white and not a single white person works for them.*

How intolerant of me... we also should have physically and mentally challenged quotas too. I suppose they might need an able-bodied aide to assist them to take part in the games - but it is in the interest of fairness that we make sure all potentially oppressed sub-cultures be represented fairly in all professional sports teams. "The Washington Redskins, now featuring REAL Native-Americans. Our Native-American player is also a recovering alcoholic, allowing us to meet our American's With Disabilities Act quota and our Native-American Diversity quota for the team in one player... Your #38... Johnathon Little Hawk.!!!!""Joining Little Hawk on the field is his AA mentor, Tom Calinski - who will provide moral support should Little Hawk at any time feel over-pressured in the course of the game. Calinksi wears the #38.5 jersey and together they count as a single player while on the field.""Anyone know if Little Hawk is gay, too? That would really help us out. Would he be willing to BECOME gay?!?"

These are not the same things necessarily. You can limit your awards/recognition to any group you want (Miss Black America, Miss White America). You can set up a fund to allow people to donate money to a cause of their choosing (UNCF). Your television network or newspaper, or blog, or website can focus on the content it chooses (BET).You are not allowed to make hiring decisions based on race (among other things). You are not able to restrict access to your business establishment based on race (restaurants, shops, golf courses, or anything else). As long as this guy is running a rec league, I imagine he'll be fine. He'll have access to public facilities just as the KKK or Aryan Nations can get a permit to hold a parade. If he is paying his players in any way, he'll be violating long-standing discrimination laws. If he allows open admission to the public, but only to the white public, he'll have some problems if he's using public or commercial facilities. If he charges for admission, he'll have to let in anyone who wishes to watch, even if the fee takes the form of some "membership fee".

Curious...Was it the pillow hair, southern accent and overt racism sported by a pawn shop owner somewhere in the south that gave it away?Other than those things, it was TOTALLY convincing.

I don't recall ever hearing how black people are forbidden from being on CMT. It just happens that white people are more interested in hip hop, rap, etc. than black people are in country music. Also, you may not realize that when letters are capitalized like BET they often are abbreviations of several different words. In this case, Black Entertainment Television. Sounds an awwwwful lot like an explicitly black station to me.
