you can get protein from other sources. the main reason for eating meat is b12.
cibelesOct 24, 2008
There is a problem in the study, and we are going to be technical in this issue and serious. First vegetarians do eat eggs and milk and dairy products so they have all the B12 they need if they eat properly. Vegans are the ones that do not eat eggs or milk, (supposed cause of the deficiency of vitamin B12). As a vegetarian (I eat eggs and milk and dairy products as well as tofu, etc) myself I can tell you that if you eat properly your needs of multivitamins are none. And I speak from the knowledge of knowing that I don't take any kind of multivitamin but Brewer's Yeast(a yeast like the one in yogurt, bread and beer) and my blood tests are terrific. So you don't really need to take any type of multivitamin if you eat the right stuff. About vitamins and vitamin B12 the one suggested by the study, vitamins tend to be destroy by the cooking process. So if you overcooked your meat to avoid salmonella for instance, you are not having any vitamin B12 in your food and in fact Americans that eat meat usually suffer from vitamin B deficiency and actually most people in the develop world. So the argument in the article makes no sense. As usual reader of medical news, I know that your brain could shrink when you get rid of plaque. It's what has happened in several studies with drugs that were tested for Alzheimer's. One of the suggestions for that is that that plaque could be the one damaging the brain when people has Alzheimer's and if you get rid of that plaque brain function improves, but there is the obvious limit to how much damage there is already in the brain. If we consider that as an explanation, what means is that a vegetarian brain is recovering and preventing further damage from an unhealthy diet. It's up to you to consider this as a good explanation or not. But the fact is the following, regardless of what you believe or want to accept the weight of your brain has very little to do with the functioning of it, what it matters is how many connections your neurons establish with other neurons, that's not mentioned in the article Regarding to how natural a vegetarian diet is, almost no human diet is natural as most stuff we eat, meat eaters and vegetarians, is processed more or less. From bread (yeast plus baking) to anything cooked, almost all we eat is processed in some way, so that is no argument against the use of multivitamins. And if you take the time to read the article, you will notice that they highlight bad eating habits. They might highlight more vegetarians, but you kinda notice a certain bias in it.

When considering the causes of Alzheimers I feel you would better placed to consider the role of Insulin or rather lack of it due to a condition known as insulin resistance. Carbohydrate is the bodies preferred fuel but only because it's easier to process, more like a higher grade fuel and for this reason one must consider not just the volume but also the type eaten as refined carbohydrate is high octane rocket fuel...and we're not machines. Carbohydrate is the only macronutrient that is 'none' essential...we can not just do without it but we can thrive without it. The root cause of all obesity epidemics around the world is without any question, carbohydrate. In addition it is carbohydrate (sugar) that is responsible for destabilising the brain function and development, couple this with a low fat diet and your in big trouble as nothing is more stabilising to the brain than natural dietary fat. Carbohydrate rich diets (sugar) damage the brain.
The more likely reason Americans suffer vitamin B deficiency is down to the high levels of carbohydrate. This depletes serotonin and greatly depletes B vitamins needed to convert amino acids to the neurotransmitters. Americans have a high 'carb' loading due to the processed foods they consume.
Your last point concerning a natural diet is both correct and incorrect in that it is only in the developed world where we see un-natural diets of a high carbohydrate loading, where we find people consuming a diet of this type we find..obesity, heart, disease, metabolic syndrome + many more. In cultures not exposed to processed foods (sugar) obesity is almost unheard of, but noticeable by their absence are the autoimmune and degenerative diseases mentioned before. The case against carbohydrate but in particular refined carbohydrates is overwhelming.
I studied nutrition extensively and along with all my family only consume a natural diet free of refined carbohydrate, but also high in saturated fat with a protein intake of around 20-25%. Though this was not always the case as there was a time before my studies when my our diet was as most others in the developed world. However I was 45lbs heavier and in pretty poor health on a collision course with one of those modern diseases, my wife was overweight, our 12 year old son had been overweight for most of his life. Thankfully that was then and this is now, we are all lean and fit in optimal health with no medical complaints whatsoever.
I would also like to make one last point and that is that no human culture in our evolutionary history has ever adopted vegetarianism by choice.
Vegetarianism is a fashionable trend and an unhealthy one at that.

It's a well known fact amongst people that don't have any kind of diet bias, that the size of your brain has absolutely nothing to do with how intelligent your are. Thomas Edison had (I believe), a very small head and brain, and he was kind of intelligent and had a bunch of discoveries and patents under his belt. And that is just one example. Brain size and head size is proven to have no relation whatsoever with intelligence.

You're not going to be dugg down because there are vegetarians in this place and will try for that not to happen. :)I'm vegetarian myself and I haven't eaten meat or fish or chicken in years.

Same for me. My doctor suspects that either I am allergic to specific meat proteins (it is worse for me with cow-meat than with anything else) or that we need symbiotic bacteria in our gut to actually digest meat and my intestines are the wrong pH, temperature, or something else to enable those bacteria to live.

The British Medical Journal reports that the more smart you are, the more likely you?d be vegetarian(vegan)! <a class="user" href="http://preview.tinyurl.com/HiIQMensa">http://preview.tinyurl.com/HiIQMensa</a>its probably because we use our brain more efficiently so its compact. the old saying quality not quantityPlusLivestock-produced methane is the #1 source of global warming. You can reduce your carbon footprint on the Earth more by going vegan, than from switching from a Hummer to a Prius.check out these Public Service Announcements and find out the truth about the benefits of a veggie diet on your health and the planetGot Water? About 990 liters of water are required to produce one liter of milk. The meat industry wastes more water than any other industry. The only reason modern veganism can lead to a diet deficient in B12 is because of food production techniques and the evolution to a more sterilized world, especially in developed countries. B12 can be readily found in the soil that your vegetables grow in, assuming they haven't been sterilized for the market. By pressure washing our produce, we are stripping B12 from them in exchange for cleanliness. So take the B12 supplement and be a happy, healthy vegan, or go grown your own food and be a happy, healthy vegan.

Albert Einstein, Plato, Aristotle, Socrates, Confucius, Isaac Newton and Thomas Edison were all vegetarians. According to this article over here:

Don't know if that proves anything =)

Something we've known for some time, nothing is better for the brain than saturated animal fats...period!

There are lots of sources of Omega 3 other than meat. Flax seeds come to mind and algae is a major source. It's where the fish get it from in the first place.
I'm sure there are many more if you'd care to look. The point is, one can have achieve extremely good health as a vegan. Meat is not essential.
One can also attain good health with meat in the diet as long as there's not too much of it and it's organic.
Some of our earliest ancestors were "hunter gatherers"; meat was most certainly part of their diet and much of it was probably carrion. Homo sapiens is an omnivorous species but does not require meat to flourish or even survive.

I don't know about this... But I do love meat. I guess my brain will be large

Man's carnivorous diet is a big contributing factor to human brain evolution.

Why is it that vegetarians (or vegetables), as some call them, always have to tell everyone that they are a vegetarian? It seems that they want attention based on their suffering.
These are the same people that have to tell you how many miles they rode their bicycle, or how many miles they hiked, etc. It is obvious that they need attention for what they perceive as suffering.
housodawgsApr 26, 2012
What "suffering" are you talking about? Are you saying it's torture to not eat meat or something? Because that is hardly the case. In my experience, vegetarians have many different personality types, some are bashful, in fear of being ostracized, and some are more outgoing about it, and then all the inbetweeners. You criticize people who have done their research and chosen a way of life different than yours, as many closed-minded people tend to do. Considering America is the fattest, most unhealthy country (I assume you are from America, but could be wrong) I don't see why anyone should care if a vegetarian or a meat eater is discussing their diet or bike riding skills... Maybe they are trying to be motivating to others. Are you so quick to criticize Lance Armstrong? He's a vegan and quite an excellent bicyclist.
