Okay, I'm going to clarify the whole Venom Identify Crisis because I am a HUGE spider-man fan and have the comic book story about Venom. During Intergalactic Superhero wars, Spider-Man's original costume was destroyed so he "borrowed" what he thought was a high tech suit. It had some amazing abilities which complemented his own: Amazing camouflage (costumes ability to look like anything he thought of), regeneration, enhanced strength, "organic" webbing (no cartridges/web fluid required), gas filtering and other neat tricks. Peter was still Peter in the original comic book, there were no personality changes (the movie obviously changed that to get more viewers), but there were changes in other things: Sleeping habits (he would sleep through entire days), he would be "sleep-crawling" in the night without knowing it and he was constantly tired for reasons he didn't know. Occasionally the costume would be reluctant to remove itself from Peter. Realizing his Peter Parker life was spiraling out of control, he took the costume to Mr. Fantastic who determined it was a Symbiote and upon that discovery the organism tried to permanently graft itself to Peter Parker, but was forced away from him by Mr. Fantastic's sonic gun and imprisoned. So now we have an organism who frankly didn't understand the situation, felt betrayed when it thought (perhaps rightfully) it was working in a positive manner with Peter despite the physical exhaustion it created in its host) and had been separated from the only person it had known and imprisoned in solitary confinement. When it got out and found Brock, we had to people who both hated Spider man (peter Parker) so they had a common cause and the merger became venom with a warped since of morality: only hurt guilty, leave the innocent alone.Peter was "guilty" of abandoning its partner and wrongfully imprisoning the the costume and of causing Brock to lose his liberty (or so they felt). Hope that clarifies everything both with when identity was establish as well as where the movie strays from the original story. Oh, Carnage is Venom's (well alien organism's) offspring. FYI

Here's hoping for another cameo by Stan Lee and that lady plucking her violin to the tune of the old Spider-Man theme song.
