RE: "... I think at one point they had to scrap the whole thing and start over. It's a shame, because many of the features sounded really cool... "You are correct, and the project that Microsoft scrapped was known as "Longhorn".The Longhorn project (after 2 years of development) was s**t-canned, and Microsoft then went on to use Windows Server 2003 as the basis for "Vista".Microsoft even gave the "s**t-can Longhorn" event a name, they called it the "Reset".
OSX runs my productive work. It runs VNC to fix my co-workers computers, it runs Microsoft Office for creating and editing documents for my boss, and I tend to find its network tools a bit easier to work with when diagnosing network problems. I'm sorry if I like to kick back with a little TF2 when I get home. Also, I better give the bonus I just got back to my boss, because apparently he's been doing management all wrong. :-/
I don't use those currently. And I have CS3 installed on OSX. Works just fine. It's native. And when I was taking a 3D design course for a class in college, ProDesktop, the app they were teaching us with, ran just fine in Parallels.
I recently purchased a new laptop. I am very happy with the hardware, but I wanted XP, not vista. I solved this problem by upgrading to Ubuntu. As a bonus, the machine is faster and I don't have to wait for it to "configure updates" at shutdown even though I turned auto-updates off. This "forcing people to buy Vista" isn't scoring any points with me... in fact it's pushing me further away!

I don't think it indicates the problems with MS as much as how much marketing molds our society!!!
