news.ucf.edu — This is the promise of the 3-D Optical Data Storage system developed at the University of Central Florida (UCF). This technology allows to record and store at least 1,000 GB of data on multiple layers of a single disc. By using several layers, this technique will increase the storage capacity of a standard DVD to more than a terabyte.

"They have developed a new technology that will allow users to record and store massive amounts of data -- the museum’s entire collection or as many as 500 movies, for example -- onto a single disc or, perhaps, a small cube."Is the cube also backwards compatible?

this is really badly written, on one hand they are saying they have figured out how to write more info onto a DVD, next they are saying it's *like* a DVD - which is it? a DVD or not?

Why are you digging xerox down? He's right about both things, I mean, "we have 2 layer DVD's so is a new format and can't be read on regular DVD players", duh?READ: http://www.dvdrw.com/why/doublelayer_faq.htmAnd if fits the tray nicely, it doesn't matter if is just a little more thicker, JUST A LITTLE. Case aside all the DVD's and Cd's are not made the same, i bet even some DVD's on the market now could be as thicker as those new DVD's.Anyway, it's vaporware IMHO.

I agree with the above comments that stupid people should take heed, this is **not** a conventional DVD, but a disc about the same thickness/diameter as the current standard of DVDs. All that being said, f**k yeah.

very good point here... DVD's are very slow at data transfer rates when it comes to a terabyte of storage... might as well just wait for holographic DVD writable discs to come out, max storage I believe is supposed to reach 1.6TB per disc...
