nytimes.com — Several weeks into his first year of teaching math at the High School of Arts and Technology in Manhattan, Austin Lampros received a copy of the school?s grading policy. He took particular note of the stipulation that a student who attended class even once during a semester, who did absolutely nothing else, was to be given 45 points on the 100-poin

Sez witcompe: "Or to put it bluntly, there is a vast difference between knowledge and wisdom. While you may be very knowledgeable, you are not very wise."I was one of those people who aced the tests without showing up to class. Managed not to get kicked out of high school because the administration was afraid of my mom (in their defense, she is pretty scary). Managed to pull the same BS in college too. My boss, unfortunately, isn't too keen on paying me to show up hours late just because I know there won't be anything to do until lunch time. For some reason the people who pay you generally want you to (at least appear to) give a s**t about your job. Now if you're going to pay yourself....

Someone needs to tell her that being a man does not mean bending to her will and doing something wrong and against the man's morals, and it instead means beating some sense into her for the good of humanity.

I think it's more of hiding in the back of the class and doing the homework, rather then being alloted time to do the work.

right, because who ever learned anything from studying?

There have been problems in our educational system for a long time, but you do understand that NCLB is making this problem much worse right? NCLB says that schools get punished if their students do poorly. So prinicpals artificially inflate the grades and pass rates so they don't lose any government funding. Students who figure this out can put no effort whatsoever into their education and still pass. Under Clinton we had a nation of apathetic losers, under Bush that apathy is encouraged.

Screw "grade inflation." Grades and tests should be used for exactly one purpose: to evaluate whether the student has in fact learned the material. The notion that they should be used to rank students is absurd. It is a major failing of the education system that we currently treat grades as anything more than an indicator of knowledge and that we then tailor teaching and test questions to match that dysfunction. Most "good"/"highly ranked" schools often cater to standardized tests in their curricula. If the only reason for learning is to get a high paying job then our society is doomed. Knowledge is valuable in and of itself. Not all knowledge is valuable to all people, and educational systems should not pretend otherwise.
