blogs.zdnet.com — Can open source methodology be applied to film production? Yes, says UK filmmaker and author, Matt Hanson, whose own project, 'A Swarm of Angels', is attempting to "crowdsource" the funding, production, and distribution of a $1.9+ million dollar movie.

when has good art ever been produced when you have so many people involved in the creative process? its the singular vision of usually one artist or maybe a few working in close collaboration which makes a work so strong, not a collective. and filmmaking has always been referred to as a kind of dictatorship, not a democracy. i'm curious as to what the end result may be but my expectations are very low.

Due to the crowdsourcing idea, they'd only be able to participate in a very limited capacity, which also limits any recognition they'd get from it.

This is a total rethink of how to make a movie which is more creatively distinctive. Everyone should support that!

SellaBand has managed to pull it off with music. Within 7 months since their launch 4 artists have already managed to raise the funds to record an album. They seem very well on their way to put the music industry on its head. Instead of selling the music they will give it away for free. And instead of buying advertisement space, they will sell it. May we live in interesting times: http://www.sellaband.com

A similar concept to SciFi Studios (www.scifistudios.com) .. only SFS has more than one project going. Check the forums. (oh, and nvm the crappy site, they're soon done with a complete overhaul)

FIlmmaking is a seroiulsy collaborative art form if it's allowed to be. Many people have been blind sided by big Hollywood egos and the auteur mentality.

One of the main points is that a lot of filmmakers and people involved in films in one form or another are the ones jumping on to this. A big aspect will be to maintain a certain level of knowledge and experience in the subscribers. Not to sound elitist but I think that's apart of the concept.

I did my research before joining the Swarm. Since I have joined I have received 2 personal e-mails from Matt regarding my comments and ideas. While reading the comments and ideas of others, it is amazing the amount of unbelievably talented people this project has attracted.Every ones contributions are taken seriously. We are all treated with respect and feel part of a team. Fleeced? Baaaaad comment from someone who is outside and does not understand what we are doing.
