Yes, it is an average. Which would mean it includes every single American. Do you really think toddlers and the elderly are using any plastic bottles? If they are, not many. Also, in response to some of your questions, I don't drink soda and the vast majority of the time drink water or gatorade (made from powder) out of a Nalgene.

You do *not* need an electrolyte-laden drink to rehydrate yourself through a fever. This is product marketing gone awry. Extreme diarrhea? That's a different story.

Those water bottles & coffee cups get me every time. We should ALL try better to re-use a travel bottle or mug. I saw a trailer at the movies this past weekend for water bottle recycling- it was done by a car company!
