I think Asus came out with the right product at the right time, and they're really making waves with it. Netbooks are ideal for students because they're so portable, and they're ideal for business people who don't want to carry around a full-sized laptop just to read email and edit a report or spreadsheet. The price makes them recession-friendly, and people love them. The Linux-based ones also shred the old "Linux is too hard" thing because they come with it preinstalled. After all, how many people have had to edit their xorg.conf to get something working on it, or have compiled a new kernel? Only people who like tinkering with them.I think Asus's other Eee products are also quite revolutionary, like the small form factor Eee Box and the touchscreen one. The Eee Box is probably ideal as a cheap second computer, or for Grandma.
I commend asus for bringing netbooks into it's popularity now, but they really need to improve their design. (ie: keyboard is too small) Unlike HP mini 1000, I like it a lot. It's more usable compared with other netbooks out there. Anyway, I'm still waiting for asus to produce a netbook that is worth buying, maybe their next gen netbooks (touch screen) with windows 7.
The eeepc is a brilliant device and if mac had made one I would have bought one even quicker. It has a mac build quality [almost] and simply works. Its probably the only non mac computer I'll ever get AND it doesn't have microsoft-I've got the 701 with Linux and openoffice will do everthing I need. Can't recommend them enough. They work, they're well made and a very good price, what more do you want?

17" monitor is probably why the battery doesn't last longer than 3 hours...
