I have a TrueEarnings Costco AMEX card and the story I got was that the benefit in question here (up to $300 back on a price drop of an item purchased < 90 days ago) was dropped on October 1st 2006. I guess I'll be getting $100 back via the Apple Store for both of our 2 iPhones. I'm okay with that. I wasn't expecting anything to begin with.
FTW! Called 18003221277 and the guy asked me my account info they asked me without me informing him that I was calling about the iphone about giving the tax rate for the area I bought my iphone in. I think amex knows whats up with the numbers on digg/consumerist. I asked the guy about the call volume I guess he had been getting alot of calls and he was seemed drained and said "oh we've gotten a few" lol poor amex ppl. They mentioned it was for valued customers they would 'submit' the application for these customers. Lets see how this goes.I bought 5 Iphones for my work on my personal card(IT purposes..or lack of) $1000 AMEX + $500 Apple Gift Cards+ 3,000 AMEX Points ~$80 = $1580 In Credit/Cash for just buying iphones without using ebay!!.
It's stlil not the same as $100 cash, it's basically a marketing campaign to that person who just justified buying their iPhone by saying "well, I need a Phone, and I need an mp3 player, I suppose I can get the two combined" into "Well, I got this $100 rebate, I might as well buy an mp3 player too, it's only $150 more."
As person with a company and a merchant account let me make this clear to everyone 4.5% fees for Amex versus the 1.39% rate for Visa/Mastercard. Thats more than double the rate so its no wonder that they are so much better. To be honest though I try to make all my purchases with Amex because whenever anything goes wrong you KNOW Amex will be there for you.
You have to send in your phone! You are not just getting a credit. The keyword here is "return protection". Why would I return the phone for $200? This is what they told me on the phone "after process this claim we will send you document and return label. After you send your phone to us you will get credit after 14 days."

Some AMEX cards MAY offer this feature. My AMEX card with Costco didn't. Your mileage will vary.
