Dear AMD:Thank you for buying ATI, their video cards have been a scourge on the Linux desktop for years. The elimination of the company will be a breath of fresh air.

My theory is they are buying it to liquidate it and sell the meaty bits to nvidia. We can hope, can't we?

It's been said before...AMD can't afford to buy ATYT because they'll be about $2.5b short of the price tag ($5.6b). They'd have to issue stock and dilute their already weak shares, since AMD has only about $2.5b in cash.

This is a good deal for both AMD and ATI if it pans out. AMD really has no answer to Intel integrated graphics and inventually integrated graphics will become the future. As of right now though and the near future there is still life left in Third PartyCards. ATI was suppose to blow Nvidia out the door with their new technology but only manage to slightly give them an edge but at a cost premium - ATI cards are just too expensive. Nvidia seems to be able to stretch its current technology out a lot further than ATI. Another shock was how quick Nvidia jumped on the multi-core bandwagon. Not sure if ATI even has a dual core answer. If they don't, a merger with AMD might give them access to such technology a lot cheaper than if they could do it on their own. AMD would get ATI's expertise at gpu making which could start competing with Intel on the Integrated Graphics front. It also doen't hurt to make money off your competition. Imagine if AMD loss market share because Intel's CPU line is just awesome. AMD could win some of it back by selling Graphic Cards to those users.Hope they pull it off. I like shaking up the market every now then. This would definitely put an interesting twist in PC market.

Good, maybe now AMD can write some decent drivers instead of that bloated s**t ATI has now.
