laweekly.com — They say there?s no such thing as a free lunch, but what about a free film festival? ?We were looking to make a bold move,? says AFI Fest artistic director Rose Kuo. It was time to turn the conversation around, to do something somewhat audacious, and to get people excited about indie film.?

Put me in the group who would rather pay more for a better experience. Let all the cheapskates get their free movies in theaters filled with the crying babies, non-stop talkers and people answering their cell phones.I can afford my entertainment. If I couldn't, I would have bigger concerns in my life that what happens in the latest Star Wars sequel.

What a misleading title. This isn't about mainstream films going free, it's about making a film festival free to the general public. It will have corporate sponsorship and if you thought web ads were obnoxious, wait until you start going to corporate sponsored events like this. It will make NASCAR, IRL, etc. cars look spartan and tame in comparison. I do NOT welcome the era or corporate sponsorship and product placement in film and television but thanks to the teeming mass of cheapskates on the internet, that's where we're headed with flim, TV, and quite likely music (larger concerts are already somewhat sponsored but when tickets are expected to be free it will get worse).
