I have a lot of time, and like trains so I take them as much as possible. But, in North America its is NOT cheaper than flying. Example, I can go From Toronto to Vancouver for less than $300 by plane but more than $500 by train. Same goes for many long distance trips in the US.The US$700 or so for a month's rail pass is a good deal though.
You must have missed the story in Sacramento. Amtrak train engineer stops train for young people on tracks. He gets out, they beat the **** out of him and rob him.

Oh you think trains are safe? We'll you haven't read my script for Speed 3: Off The Rails. It's really going to open a lot of eyes in this country.

There's something so romantic about trains - as well as them being so relaxing (as long as they turn up on time). What's your favorite way to travel on vacation?
