The problems started when Islam turned in a political movement not long after Muslims moved from Mecca to Medina (not called that then) back in the 7th century. The political gains of a band of pirates were seen as gifts of a religious sort and amplified into more political gains.The people who feel righteous in killing their siblings to "honor their family" are doing so because these teachings were codified as the basis of a religious movement whose fundamentalist element takes these teachings quite literally.

I've been called neo-con on occasion. Don't think they actually mean neo-con in any strict meaning of the term. These days it's merely used like for instance "idiot" (or "zionist") to denigrate somebody you disagree with. Something like "commie" of the left.

Just because you don't hear about it in the Southeast Asian muslim community doesn't mean it doesn't happen there. It just means that the news are tightly controlled there. Or worst yet, the practice is so commonplace that people don't deem it as worthy news in those places. It's a cultural thing.
