modernlifeisrubbish.co.uk — One thing that has persisted throught the life of the hypertext-enabled web is the design cliché - trends or 'memes' that catch on amongst a large percentage of web users. the ones i see the most are probably the Wet Floor and the Gradients. Gradients do add a nice effect when used correctly, Diagonals are also a nice effect. Wet Floor is starting to be overdone

"They forgot one-pixel ads."How do we go from a mention of one-pixel ads to a discussion of the milliondollarhomepage.com which sold pixels in blocks of 100?" God, that's just stupid."Yes, one pixel ads would clearly be very stupid. Unless perhaps you could work out a way to convey your message using only a tiny block of a single colour, in which case it could be argued it is a work of genius.

Whenever people complain about the overuse of dots, they seem to bring up this non-example: del.icio.us' dots are not cliche. del.icio.us was one of the first (if not the first) websites to do that in addition to its use of font sizes and tags. del.icio.us was a leader in the Web 2.0 revolution, not a follower.
