The initial hardware can be expensive. But then, you only have to buy it once. Compared to say the Fusion razors whose blade cartridges cost $30 for a set of eight, the entire straight razor, strop, and honing kit doesn't look too bad! Myself I use a traditional double-edge safety razor. They go for $20-50, they last forever, and you can get blades for fifty cents a piece, or even cheaper at walmart, a buck fifty for a pack of ten, and it shaves better than a multiblade. Oh yeah, and the safety razor doesn't vibrate like a dildo and make you feel like a homo.
BEST ADVICE I CAN GIVE: use a brush and shaving soap. the crabtree and evelyn shaving soap (sandalwood) is what I use. it lasts 1 year for $17 and is 10000x better than ANY shaving stuff available at the grocery store. WOMEN who want a great gift idea should get their man the nice shaving soap and a shaving brush. (Note: the cheapest shaving brush is available at Walgreens. The ones at Crabtree & Evelyn are $75+!) Trust me folks, this is how to get the best shave.

That's not manly enough. I blast my beard off with a shotgun each morning.

No kidding, I'd hate to see "Co-Ed's" advise/articles on the other topics, Sex, Sport.

I collected everything I learned about getting a great shave and---perhaps more important---an ENJOYABLE shave in a book: http://www.lulu.com/content/769757
