gadling.com — Is there anything the airlines haven?t tried to remove from their planes? As a matter of fact, yes. Airlines are true experts at taking. They started getting serious nearly three years ago, when American Airlines removed its galleys on some planes in order to cram in a few extra seats. But they?re not done. Far from it.

It was when I read the following sentence that I knew I was going to bury this article:"another change that may or may not make that much of a difference to airline economics. " That statement suggest that the author has no understanding of the economics of running a corporation.

Actually, I've heard mixed stories about that. My understanding was that pilots coming out of the military get to avoid much of the $60k training costs you listed due to the training and experience they received during their time in the service. Also, I was under the impression that while pilots do start out with low salaries, once they've "payed their dues" they move into $100k+ salaries. The way I see it, if that's true than that is a fair way to do things. You should know that it's the way things work before you get into the industry. Those pilots are getting their fair share in the end, assuming my understanding of the industry is correct. It's similar to the way teachers are treated in my mom's Upstate New York school district. You still start out with the, traditional, piss poor entry-level salary but can reach up to $75k+ towards the end of your career assuming you go for continued training throughout your career. While it isn't the same as the $100k+ I've heard that airline pilots make later in their careers, the benefits are better and you do get a decent amount of time off per year compared to most industries. I think this is a fair deal considering that NY state requires all teachers to have a Masters Degree to practice. Of course, most states (and even most districts in NY) don't treat their teachers this well.

Dump the extra seatbelt the flight attendant uses to teach us how to use seatbelts. (And anyone who needs to watch that demonstration could also be dumped. Maybe they should try driving in a car first.)
