talk.bmc.com — Omar Tazi gave a presentation today to a local Oracle users group in Austin about Oracle and the company's various open source activities. We all know Oracle has thousands of developers on Linux, and the Linux powers the majority of their business. However, this post goes into a little more detail on 7 of the more noteworthy efforts out of Oracle.

Oracle will be seen as an Open Source buddy when Mr. Ellison keeps his mouth shut and the company takes its membership at OIN further by forcing Microsoft to fold its patent card, which comprised 'junk patents' that are easy to invalidate. Oracle has the resource (and nerve) to do this, unlike Big Blue.

You're right. Oracle is a much more aggressive company than IBM in many ways. I'm not sure that Oracle is a friend to open source, but they know how to participate in the community successfully. Going beyond that, and getting the respect of the open source community at large, will require the type of action you mention in your comment.

Nice to see you in Austin and great summary of my presentation. Looking forward to talking some more when you come the bay area. I think you said it all, we know what it takes to work successfully with the OSS community and we are moving in that direction. We have a very healthy relationship with the OSS community and it's only going to get better. I didn't see anything in your entry WRT the SOA stuff I presented but then again, you are (just like me) an OSS guy at heart :)Cheers.
