Down the lines of not being "fair weather social networker", you should also realize that each LinkedIn member can get a regular email with what is going on with their LinkedIn network. All your contacts will be notified when you are updating your profile, increasing your contacts, answering questions, etc. So if you are a fair weather social networker and only use the LinkedIn when you are looking for a new job, be aware some people may notice or think you are job hunting. If you are linked to your current boss, he/she can see your increased LinkedIn activity level.
Yes - that's something that didn't make it into this story. Whatever you put in your Linkedin profile is open to the world. If you inflate your job title or change your settings to "interested in employment offers" or... everyone that you work with will see it. Your profile definately tells a story about who you are and where you want to go, but be cautious about overinflating yourself. The people who do know you know that it's not true. Also, people who are too linkedin can be creepy. A person with 500+ connections who spends too much time answering questions on linkedin can come off as a gratuitous, ego-centric networker.
