I certainly thought that the swimmers' physiques had a lot to do with the new speeds. Everyone winning races today has much wider shoulders, smaller heads, bigger flipper-like feet, and skinnier hips than when Spitz competed. Back in '76, the swimmers looked more like normal folk than they do now. Heck, Mark Spitz even had a big ol' (handsome) mustache to slow him down!
