pdfconverter.com — The problem is that with Microsoft as the dominant force in the computer world, you need top notch resources in order to get by without their software and still work at the same level. Trying to find credible and reliable software is the number one concern anyone should have when making such a huge shift.

What's not on the list are all the professional software packages that are industry standards (and have no freeware equivalents). If all you do is web development and spreadsheets, sure you can get by without Windows. If you're in most other industries you are going to have to deal with Windows. And I've said it before, all this nonsense about saving money (at the corporate level) is meaningless when you're talking about an OS that costs between $100-200 for a full blown version. If somebody is going to turn around and load up specialized software that may cost $10K/year for each license, a one time couple hundred dollar outlay is only noise.

The only MS products I use at all is MS Office '08... and Exchange on my iPhone for Google Sync.

The problem is, I don't want to spend months FINDING credible and reliable software, when I have all that on Windows. Running Linux is like a full time job, and I have a life outside running an OS.

Windows in convenient. Most programs work on windows, and many of them are free. There are so many programs being released for windows that you can't possibly catalog them all. There is also the huge resource of p2p files out there that let you download licensed software for free (illegal yes, do i care? no). I have yet to find any reason to switch to linux. My computer runs smoking fast and if all I have to deal with is a random blue screen now and then I am not worried. Most people want a rich media experience on their computer and we all know that Linux is bologna for that sort of thing, and mac is just a trendy alternative for people that don't know how to use a pc.

I switched to Mac and while the software is more solid, it's still proprietary and annoying.
