because of our tax rates (esp if you live in a state with high local taxes like California), people making $100K a year really don't take home much more than people making $80K a year, we are talking about a few extra hundred dollars a month.

Funny, I used to live paycheck to paycheck, and then I took an objective look at my expenditures, and suddenly I am saving several hundred dollars per month with the same paychecks. Believe you can control how your money is spent rather than allowing your spending to control your lifestyle, and planning/budgeting is not all that difficult.
