The US is much more similar to 1984. That book wasn't describing a simple military dictatorship. It described a fascist state that invested enormous amounts of energy into PR and surveillance.

It's only terrorism when Muslims do it. Caucasian Christians are "freedom fighters" or "freedom militias". /snarkThat's what happens when racism and hatred take over rational thinking. People like nonleftist start thinking with their emotions instead of their head.

OK, the US, and 1785 to answer your question. If you're referring to the problems with France or the war of 1812.....the US had continental issues with both Britain and France (Louisiana and canada).

I don't mind being a slave to work. I don't mind providing for myself. Being a slave to the monetary system is entirely different. The more and more we print the cursed money, the more and more is required of us to maintain it. But I believe I posted this back before I realized that Digg, being a purely democratic system, would contain a majority of democrats who are sympathetic to socialistic type of programs and would not have very much respect for a libertarian opinion and assume I meant the worst. While I do respect the freedom that the USA represents, and the freedoms that we do share, I still do not feel "free" in certain aspects. For example, I must work at least 40 hours a week just to pay for my housing conditions. I am not free to build my own cheap lodging for a lifestyle I might choose, such a thing would put me in prison.
