"Controversy" is a "relative" topic. What was controversial forty years ago might be common today. I'm not sure the 9-11 comics were controversial in that they were a normal tribute to a tragic event. (After having lost friends as a result of that attack, I really doubt that I would have given a damn about offending anyone who might have been offended by such a tribute.)When the Harry Osbourne and Speedy stories came out they were very controversial. The Comics Code was a big thing back then. Congress had pushed it years back when the Horror and Romance comics were starting to push the limits (for back then) and the censorship of superheroes followed. We didn't have bulletin boards to discuss comic events and sales were limited not to comic book stores but to new stands. Many new stands could not sell those titles because they weren't approved and some were reported to have had to move the titles away from the part of the stands that were accessible to children.
There is a Batgirl, Cassandra Cain. Ex-assassain turned do-gooder.Also, the new Bawoman actually isn't out of the closet, at least not in her real life - she's a real-estate heiress.
