I'm laughing because the apps listed for windows are essential to keep Windows running, while the apps for Linux don't enhace security but rather are network manager tools that are meaningless to the average user.

No ESET security Suite runs faultlessly on both Vista machines here. NOD32 is included in this. Are you using an up to date version?

Nothing wrong with an outbound only firewall. If your machine has something illicit already installed, then that is what anti-virus is for, and besides any "good" virus will either kill the firewall (having root privileges and all) or just tunnel out through one of the many ports that are white listed like say HTTP. Outbound firewalls are over hyped.Now, some sort of security app that does packet inspection at the firewall would be an improvement over XP's firewall (as well as iptables on Linux...) but that wasn't mentioned.
