baron.vc — I looked at the Digg top users list and wondered, “Why are some users getting their stories front-paged on a regular basis?” What is their secret? I’ll say one thing, the thrill of seeing your story on the front page is priceless and well worth the effort!

The friends list does indeed have some power.

From my experience, if you submit 5 really good stories a day they're more likely to all reach the front page. 30 stories a day, are likely to all die close to the finish line. I also think that if you have 30 stories to submit every day, you're either spamming or duping.

Sorry, for replying to my own comment but if you have too many shots of your mug (avatar) lined up in the upcoming queue, you're giving people too many choices. They do the natural thing: don't choose any of them. 3 at any given moment in different categories is probably the max in terms of maintaining quality and being prominent enough. There's all kinds of psychology involved. The fascinating thing is despite all the jedi mind tricks only the good ones survive to the front and even if some slip by they get a group beatdown real quick.
