This isn't one of those situations. Bailouts are necessary to stop financial contagion; if you let financial contagion spread, the problem will continue to get worse and worse and the economy will never rebound at all. Look at Japan and their lost decade.

If you could get the money to the people that needed it instead of lining the pockets of politicians, organizations, warlords and on and on and on. Sound familiar?

Salcinorinthc, your dad likely made one of the better moves. In NYC, that would be considered a near success story of the welfare program. The system is poorly designed and usually run even worst. The people that I remember abusing the system usually lived in dirt cheap 'low-income housing' and/or projects. Rents there range from $125-500 a month with free heating and electric. This likely made it easier to deal with the hassles and smaller checks. Also, scamming a system involves more than merely being able to deal with the system. Many use forgery, inside friends, and manipulated their own financial history to speed up the process. This also help for getting a bigger check. Since your family was likely honest, you get hit the hardest by the system.Used to laugh when I'd see a welfare recipient driving around in an SUV with rims worth $10-20k. Think only the rims were insured. lol

Who said that all 922 million people in Africa were starving to death? Heh, I don't doubt that the number is high, but for Christ's sake--- Africa isn't THAT bad.

The comments are usually much more interesting, though not necessarily in a positive way.
