dumblittleman.blogspot.com — Now I am no grammar whiz but I know a good resource when I see it. Purdue University maintains an online writing lab and I spent some time digging through it. Originally the goal was to grab some good tips that would help me out at work and on this site, but there is simply too much not to share.

I'm a huge fan of spelling things properly - when I have the space to do so. However, when one is limited by the character restrictions on SMS messages, and other such mediums, it sometimes becomes imperative that one contracts 'you' down to 'u'.

You'll need a coordinating conjunction to separate independent clauses with a comma.

What's the point here? Is that some kind of half-assed excuse for the difficulty you have expressing yourself clearly? Maybe the rules are awkward and maybe they aren't, but we've all got to deal with them regardless. Maybe it would even be worthwhile to make up a newer less awkward standard, but a failure to attend to detail does not qualify.

Not a bad collection of exercises. Back when I was a grad student grading millions of freshman essays, I used to say that if the student had all the commas and possessives correct, it HAD to be plagiarized.

For all the "elitist" grammar junkies...what is your tip to determine when to use "which" versus "that"...Examples in grammar guides are really not helpful at all

I went to Purdue and used their writing lab resources for almost every paper I wrote. The citation info is especially helpful.

I was always taught that it was a common mistake to use a colon for a list, as described in this article. I just did a little google search and found this to clear it up. http://nh.essortment.com/grammarpunctu_rxjn.htmI just thought I'd post it in case anybody else was ever taught the same thing. It is sort of like "I" instead of "me". I've really got to think about that now but from the opposite direction. I was always taught in elementary school to say "I" instead of "me", when it is actually wrong in my cases.e.g. "Bob and me went to the store." That should be "Bob and I".But... "Give that pizza to Bob and I." That should be "Bob and me"........ I think.
