nytimes.com — While Wi-Fi is serving up Internet access in a growing patchwork of places like coffeehouses and, in some cases, across entire cities, it can fall short of the demands of laptop users who want a gateway to the Internet essentially everywhere they go.

This article is crap unless the only thing you wanted to compare were the rate prices and the advertised coverage numbers. It would have been nice for the author to actually say how each card performed in his driving test and gee, I don't know maybe a TABLE or GRAPH that shows the services side-by-side? Really, is that too much to ask for?

I have a Motorola e815 phone on Verizon. I have the Vcast service for $15 and use the DUN via Bluetooth to get onto the EVDO network. Never had any problems get a fast connection and the calls don’t show up on my bill. This is much better than having to pay for a separate plan and spend $60 a month for a service I occasionally use.

Or what if you want to browse the net on a laptop of your own at work, so as not to have all your browsing on the company net be logged? This would do the trick I would think.

I've had a bell wireless data for about three years. first, it's expensive and for the most part slow, so I use it to fax, email and if I have to surf, turn off the images. So far I hate it, but the coverage is fairly standard. The cell card is a Sierra Wireless 555, anyone have any experience with this?

This article is incorrect in stating that the Verizon Wireless 5740 card is not Mac compatible. It is. The Mac software is a free download from Verizon (you must enter your broadband tele number to get it). I had this card and it is not very good because it doesn't have a positionable antenna. I was getting only one bar with that card - if I aimed my PowerBook in the right direction. I returned this card and ordered the Kyocera KPC650 which works amazingly well. I now get all four bars most of the time.

How about usinga Wi-Fi t-shirt to detect strength of the wireless signal around you.... I think it is crazy. So far I have never see anyone wearing one like that.http://nuuniform.com/wp/product-group/t-shirts/con ...

Not a good article for sure. Doesn't even mention datajack.com which is the cheapest no contract data plan I know of.
