It may be a technological possibility, sure, but the question is whether or not Nintendo is still terrified of the online market. I'm still a little nervous about that, because let's face it, none of the online issues with the Wii are the result of technological limitations, but rather, because Nintendo is afraid to embrace online gaming (and yes, I say afraid - I don't think it's bungling, as many do, but rather, they hold back because they're worried too much online functionality will hurt their kid-friendly image).
ultraseamusJun 28, 2010
Sure, 3D body parts will be flying back and forth, but Nintendo just needs to beef up their user contracts, strengthen the parental controls, and bite the.... bullet. The 360 above all other consoles has proven that the public wants strong online functionality. I do not care much about the Wii's low tech specs; but the laughable online functionality is what keeps me wishing that every Wii game I have ever enjoyed had come out on a different console.

I can't wait to see this on a PC, imagine chatting with those web cam girls that like to flaunt it all the time. lol

3d boobs!

3D boobs are an old, old technology.... but still the best:-)

how is it possible if there are no 2 front facing cameras?
tiakJun 28, 2010
They've said a couple times that the design isn't finalized.
cdnchaozJun 28, 2010
If they somehow modified the design to allow the cameras to swivel...hmmm.
larkstewJun 29, 2010
I always thought it was cheap on Star Trek when they'd be talking to someone on the viewscreen and they'd stand up and the camera would follow them. But, then I learned about face tracking software that uses a higher resolution image and crops it down to the face they're tracking. So Star Trek even got some of its poetic licence right.
lynx44Jun 28, 2010
Knowing Nintendo, they'll release a revised version with two cameras 6-12 months after the first one launches.
chrizzly89Jun 28, 2010
Yet. The thing presented on E3 was still a prototype.
evolvedantJun 29, 2010
A bathroom mirror.
But keep in mind video chat doesn't require your face. You can have a video chat while showing nature, etc to someone in 3d. Example: Hey, check out my new pet tarantula in 3d!
essarJun 28, 2010
The 3DS is going to wind up costing an arm and a leg at this rate.
futilityJun 28, 2010
This is different than the 3D chat that's already available in Person® right?

Man, I really hate those "wait 15 seconds or click here to continue to the article" ads...
shroommiJun 28, 2010
Lucky, mine was 30seconds, but at least there's a "click here to skip to the article" button.
kolop1Jun 28, 2010
I've use video chat through Skype and can say it's not as exciting as it sounds. Seeing a friend in miles away is fun for a minute, I'd rather use a cell phone.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.
kvachonJun 28, 2010
I think thats where the iPhone hit a missing feature. Showing other things to your video chat buddy, by using the camera on the back.
Scenario:
"Is this the shirt you wanted"
"No, its the one to the left of that"Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.
pxtlJun 28, 2010
Will it still use Friend Codes? If so, I have absolutely no interest in any online aspects.
mikeosxJun 28, 2010
If I can overlay a Mario mustache over my face, then I'm sold.
heavystoneJun 28, 2010
How? To make a 3D image/picture you need 2 cameras. The "back" of the lid has 2 cameras because of the 3DS 3D picture option. But the inside camera for video chat is only one...I fail to see how they are going to implement this.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.

It wouldn't exactly be taxing to slap another camera on the front if they so chose. Not saying they will, it's just it wouldn't be a major redesign of the system or anything.
tiakJun 28, 2010
Errr, no, that way to "cheat" would not create any 3D effect at all unless the camera was actually physically moving.
heavystoneJun 28, 2010
Considering the 3DS has little CPU power but instead GPU power, I would suspect it would result in choppy video.
graemeeJun 28, 2010
Even Nintendo liked Facetime
evolvedantJun 29, 2010
I love how you make it a point to come up with an elaborate 'cheap' solution that is obviously flawed just to bash the idea, when something as simple as a MIRROR would work. As well, why does video chat require your face to be the subject of the video? You can have video chat about interesting objects in 3d that don't involve your face.

altorJun 28, 2010
Just... please... no friendcodes. Please.
puzzudJun 28, 2010
Why dig down altor? I fully agree. Nintendo should at least think of a way to allow adults to bypass (prove they are not a minor) friend codes. As long as Nintendo wishes to keep using friend codes, I do not deem any networked Nintendo device as being legitimately 'online.'
snaxieJun 28, 2010
Personally I don't want any sort of video chat. With a voice only call I can be scooting around the condo getting chorez done while I talk...video chat takes too much focus. Sure video is fun at first....you get to smile at your friend and everyone has a laugh when a cat walks into the picture....but the novelty wears off real fast.
f**k the future....Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.

daviz0Jun 28, 2010
bet you will not see this technology in the iphone till the os73.2
trdrstvJun 28, 2010
I'm all for Video Chat on the DS, but please please please let this be open to outside developers like Skype.
familyguyJun 29, 2010
And I'm willing to bet that when the novelty of 3D chatting wears off, it will be as exciting as the chat feature was on the original DS.
urno1specialJun 30, 2010
Man, if only there were another way to talk to someone in 3-D... I bet that would really catch on.
gamechiefJun 30, 2010
This is exactly what I thought when I saw the 3DS. They missed a golden opportunity for video chat by not adding two cameras in front. If they went back and changed this, I would forever worship Nintendo more than I already do.
