ballergoods.com — Macs were preferred by the filmmakers of 300. Even though Final Cut Pro was not the main editing software used for 300 it was preferred over Avid. Shake was also the main program used for the 2D effects and Quicktime HD was the choice for creating the HD movie previews.

Of course you'd use quicktime to create the quicktime trailer. There's no other software out there that creates quicktime hd trailers.

"I've heard a lot of complaints about missing functionality, but I've never heard of anyone claiming that avid was easier to learn. Congratulations, you're the first. And you really explained yourself too..."FCP piggy-backed on the template that Avid established. That template evolved over years before the entrance of FCP and cherry-picked from other platforms. But from a dead stop, I'd say Avid is more direct than FCP. My two bits, FWIW"If you're not an idiot, you can not lose the data. I've never had FCP delete or ruin any files for me. And a good storyteller can work with anything."I have and I'm no idiot. And I work with both; what's at issue is what I prefer and why."Directors/Producers usually hire editors with a particular machine in mind (usually avid)."Maybe at the level you're working at but, as I said, as long as the gear doesn't get in the way of the storytelling, the gear's an afterthought. People hire me for what I bring to a cut, not what gear I use."The systems that the editors use most often is a big part of their resumes, not the biggest, but still important." Maybe if you're just out of college or somesuch. Given the flexibility of the platforms now, the biggest can be laid out pretty much identically which makes the backoffice elements more important than ever. The biggest part of my reel is what I've cut, how it looks and did I finish on-time and on-budget. Again, the gear's inconsequential to the Producer."If you've ever sat in on the production side, you'd see that."I have and the ones that hire based on what gear you've used aren't looking for someone who can save a production; they're looking for a mechanic."If they find an editor they like that uses another, they might change. Of course this all depends on where you're working in the industry. With low budget indies, they'll often expect an editor to provide their own machines." Maybe news to you but that applies on the high-end as well. The gear's not nearly so expensive as it used to be and paying it off happens a lot more quickly. That's where the shakeout happens though; now, it's just not enough to be an Avid guy anymore. You need to bring some creativity to the table and that's where the rubber hits the road.

Exactly. How often do you see PC lovers pointing out every little thing that they are used for or excel at? Not often.Because we....pay attention here Mac heads....DON'T NEED TO.

The movie was great, but who cares what was used to make it?

I can see the haters are in full swing.Saying that the plot sucked or whatever is a hell of a lot more convincing than saying "It looks like s**t."Like the movie or not...it most certainly did not look like s**t.

I'm a partner in a high definition production studio & prepress house, working in everything from training videos to national commercials & feature films, as well as producing a magazine with a 40,000 print run, and I have found that Avid users are typically the same users who still shoot with their BetaCams. Old editors tend to get stuck on old technology, and yes Avid does work great with ProTools (industry standard) and old timers on the press side still love Quark (industry standard), but the folks on the bleeding edge of technology like myself go with what works best, and Avid is not the answer, and shockingly enough, neither is ProTools, both are fine, but Final Cut Pro & Logic are an amazing duo. We have long since said f**k YOU to industry standards, thrown away our Avids, waved bye bye to ProTools, and Quark has always been the biggest piece of s**t software for printing. We use FCP, Logic & InDesign. Talk to folks who "do" audio for a living, and ask them which they prefer, Logic or ProTools? You may be suprised. Everyone I work with has to have ProTools for the industry, but prefer and work mainly with Logic. Avid is in the business of selling a bunch of hardware and it is such a weak interface. If you are stuck on shooting film (which is totally unnessesary these days), then stick to your old technology and Avid. But for those who are moving forward and shooting in HD & editing in HD, get a Mac, get a copy of FCP & get to work. Not a Mac vs PC thing either, we just don't like buying a bunch of hardware that only serves one purpose. Avid requires a bunch of expensive hardware, where Final Cut Pro is just a $1500 piece of software. Yes you need a powerful Mac to run it quickly, but that same Mac serves so many other functions as well. Avid is championed by those who are too scared to change. Just my opinion, feel free to disagree and digg me down, for I give not a f**k. Apple & FCP pay my mortgage, so obviously I like them a whole hell of a lot, and moving from Avid to FCP has been the BEST decision we as a company have made.

If you are a pro, uninstall Quicktime completely from an Windows AVID workstation.Launch AVID, see what it says :)AVID is still around thanks to its complete stability, evolution for many years and being QUICKTIME BASED.Ask any pro why they won't even touch Adobe Premiere.

I sure hope you're wrong... Most people don't work in Hollywood. Also I'm pretty sure the reason mac only has 4% market share is because 95% of people think it is outrageous to pay 2500 to 3500 dollars for a mac that has identical hardware of a 500 dollar pc... And all that money for what? A pretty white case that you can look at? If I wanted a white case, all I have to do is buy one for my PC. Apple use to say the reason their computers were so expensive is because of superior hardware. Now they use the exact same hardware PC's have been using from the beginning. What's the excuse now? I guess when you sell as few computers as they do, you have to rip people off, or else there goes Steve Job's big ass check... Do you really think it makes sense to spend 5x more money when the only difference is the OS? An OS that by the way has about 1% the amount of apps a PC does? Mac OS X is worth $2,500? Or is it the case? Cause it damn sure isn't the hardware.Given the fact that most people who work in Hollywood are rich, artistic, and materialistic, its not surprising to me that macs are their tool of choice. I'm sure if some other company came out with an even prettier computer that cost 5x more than a mac and did half as much, all the materialistic rich people would jump right on board w/ it. Thank God macs aren't America's computer of choice, cause if it was, I highly doubt we would have seen the internet/computer boom. The Internet can't grow if nobody can afford a computer.By the way, this was written on my iPhone 3Gs... (something that actually DESERVES praise). I used to have a mac. It was a color classic or something like that. When it crashed and burned, I got a PC. I'll never go back, simply because I love being able to replace my PC every 2 yrs or so. I also love being able to provide my daughter with a pc at the age of 6, and being able to put a pc in every room of my house. If I used mac's, I'd only be able to have ONE for the same price. And God damn, if it breaks, thats just a heart attack waiting to happen. f**k Macs.
