Encryption key? Are you kidding me? If these guys run the server farm then that means they are the "SYS ADMIN" Translation... They are GOD! They can Bring you up and running, and if they feel like it, they can shut you down...Then POOF! There goes my Euro Babes entire collection....
Guys, read the EULA carefully before you agree to it. There's an ambiguous clause:-"When you backup data via the Service, you agree that we and our service providers may copy and store such data as part of the Service."On one reading it states the obvious - if you back up your data they will store it for you. On another reading, who are their service providers and why do they want to copy your data? I'd be careful until the meaning is clarified. Another idea is to use TrueCrypt to encrypt the data first before backing it up.
I have been using it for months with no complaints, except that I haven't figured out how to upgrade from the older 1 GB free account to the latest 2 GB account. I guess I'll have to reinstall. Some thoughts:Privacy; I chose to use my own private key to encrypt my uploads and trust Mozy enough to believe that "we do NOT store or have access to the key".Spam; I have only received a few newsletters from the founder. Not a problem.Upload speed; Mozy is smart. Your files are checked for changes, compressed and encrypted before sending. If you select 2 GB of data to back up it will take a number of sessions to get everything uploaded, but Mozy figures it out and keeps at it until it finishes. After that only changes will be sent. My latest backups have taken from 2 to 15 minutes.Ease of use; backup systems don't work if they are too much trouble to be used all the time. Mozy works.
I am a bit of a geek, I have a Linux and a Windows based PC as well as a MACBook. I use an online backup service from www.Perfectbackup.co.uk because I can back all of them up at the same time to the same account. I use the free for life 1GB account because after compression I can get about 3GB of data backed up FOC.
free 10 gigs for masters students (not necessarily I.T.) with half price backup for life after graduation. The idea being we will convince our employers to pay for it..... Also, industrys longest default retentin at 365 (12 times average) and they actually backup as against most who actually mirror only.www.bacupanytime.com
