seopher.com — A recent poll shows a good percentage of *tech-savvy* XP users considering a move to Linux over an upgrade to Vista. It seems Microsoft are pushing users away with more looking at using Linux than legally upgrading.

Anyone who is holding their breath to see what the whole migration to Vista is like will NEVER move to Linux. You're either switching NOW to start familiarizing yourself with a new distro, or you're not fully committed and just toying with the idea. The latter people will open up their wallets for an overpriced up to ~300USD for a Vista license because they feel that they are powerusers who need ALL of the features, when these are the users that should finally make the jump they've been talking about for years. s**t or get off the pot.-manray

> I think ~80% will upgrade to Vista even though this will require some time ;)I hope this will not happen :P.Otherwise it will prove how stupid users are.Try to read Vista license. And before clicking "agree" try to think - are you REALLY agree with all this madness?I'm personally DO NOT.And will not upgrade to Vista even if MS offer it for free.Do not need a system I can not trust. There is spyware-like, trojan-like and rootkit-like technologies built in.Their purpose is not to protect you but to fight with piracy and to securely take your rights away with new DRM system. Thanks, I do not need handcuffs, even expensive and with brilliants built in.They're still handcuffs on my hands first, everything else is not matters.

As for me, KUbuntu 6.06.1 and 6.10 did detected my 17" LCD (on DVI interface but tested with VGA cable as well) properly and choosed best parameters very well! That is, 1280x1024 was auto-choosen during live CD bootup and for installed copy of system. This is more than 1024x768 I guess. And Windows fails to automatically set up screen resolution properly. It chooses lower one which looks quite poorly on my LCD....so, actually, there is example how Windows supports hardware worse.Actually, I'm even not aware where xorg.conf is located. Not because I'm too lame or lazy, I just do not going to fix things which are not broken, he-he :)

I have been a devoted Windows user since 3.0 and have gone through a continuous "new system" . "upgrade" costing me large sums of money. I have just switched to Ubuntu (I dual boot XP professional as well for printing and other great windows features). I have found the switch fairly easy once I understood the difference in the filing system. I do all my work in Ubuntu and store on my independent archive to allow me access from XP or ubuntu. This all being said I as a new user to Ubuntu would not found it very easy to set up if my son had not set up our family network. I personally I have found "money" to set the tone for my switch because I find good and bad in XP as well as Ubuntu.

"is there video tutorials that can teach me how to use linux? then I would switch, just I am too lazy to read, and nobody I know uses it, so no hands on learning." Linspire has one.http://media.linspire.com/howto/ I've never used it. I tried the Linspire Live CD and liked it so much I installed it and deleted Windows. You can easily get a Live disk of Mepis,Freespire,Fedora, etcand pop it in your CD drive. All your stuff should be detected and you can go on line and give Linux a test run. if you like what you see, than an install is in order.

From summary ---"It seems Microsoft are pushing users away with more looking at using Linux than legally upgrading."For the record making the switch to Linux is considered legally upgrading.

In response to "Shadowman's" reply.Great words of encoragment, but I would tell you that wasn't the case for me. I have been using Ubuntu since Hoary Hedgehog 5.04 (April 2005). I stuck with it and never turned back to Windows for the desktop.
