Battery charger: Good one. Can't remember the last time I bought batteries except for flashlights and smoke detectors. NiHM batteries don't hold their charge long enough for those.Compact Fluorescent: Decent except for the mercury pollution issues. Probably better off just keeping the lights shut off when you're not using them.Self-Cleaning Electric Shaver: Not sure what self cleaning has to do with it since you can clean a cheaper one easily with a bottle of alcohol from the drug store. I've still have never found one that shaves well.Programmable Thermostat: Well worth it if you have gas heat like I do. I've heard not so good with heat pumps.Space heater: Best thing I ever bought. Keeps the bedroom nice and cozy without heating the entire house.

I know someoen that bought a similar one for her parents last year, though it was not as big. It was not so much for energy savings, it is just because they live out in the boondocks and they lose power at the first snowfall. (And they also live on one of the highest hills in the area so they get lots of snow...and wind.) She had been living at home until the ridiculous age of 29 and was finally planning on moving out. (She never did.) and felt it was better for her aging parents to not have to get the generator started, or to fumble around in the dark whenever the power did go out. I actually don't tlak to her anymore so I don't know how it worked out, but for her it was more of a peace of mind girft and figured at the very elast they would be able to power a few CFL lights, a small dorm sized refigerator and things like a TV/radio. The energy savings all the other time was a bonus. But I would say that for just energy savings, it wis probably not worth it.

This whole article is typical of peple spreaing their own propaganda. For the alternatives to these gadgets, he is factoring in the absolutely MOST expensive currently used thing. And he exaggerates. Like with the razor. People do not spend $170+ on razor blades and shaving cream. And the water filter..So, I guess in his world people who drink bottled water ALWAYS buy them one at a time at gas stations and convenient stores, and never buy cases? I can get a 28 pack of Poland Spring for $5. Or a case of NEslte Purified WAter for $3.89. OR better yet, I can buy my "bottled" water by the gallon and spend 58 cents for a gallon. (Store brand, but it is still spring water and just as good as filtered water, especially toward the end.) So, instead of buying a new $32 cartidge for every 26 gallons I want to drink, I can pay just over $15. And I don't have to worry about cleaning out the water bottle, which people tend to not do thoroughly enough for water bottles they use every day. And those things REALLY help germs grow. And then there are the other silly things like DDR. Buy it for fun, NOT to replace a gym membership. If you go to the gym solely for cardio, there are far better and cheaper (free if it is just jogging) ways to stay in shape. Or suggesting stealing power from a bookstore. (That is not what bookstores offer outlets for.)And of course, he is assuming that, say $50 saved over 4 years is equal to $200 saved right now. These are gadgets. Buy them if you think they would be a nice alternative and you have the extra money to do so. But with hte exception of a few, don't expect them to save you money.

plncrazy...OK, so you see a significant power drain because you have 3 laser printers trying to power up at once. Are you forgetting that you also have three laser printers consuming power for hours a day when they don't need to be? You can't multpliy twhen talking about start up power and then forget about that when talking about standby consumption. The FACT is that there is no device that a home user has today that consumers more power on start up than it does in 2 hours or so in stnadby. So sure, if you use it all the time during the day, go ahead and leave it on. But it is always better to completely power down over night. Or any time that you will not be using it for a few hours or more. Always

“Smart” Power StripsMissing the point here. Why wouldn't you simply use the switch on your power switch to turn on and off all the devices? Have we really become that lazy because of the extra step involved?

Another great way is to buy your own cable modem. They cost around $80-90, and save you from the rental price of about $7 a month comcast charges.
