Webdesigners always take creative liberties with their own websites, many times ignoring best practises in favour of aesthetics so as to be able to stand out from the crowd. Most of the time they'd never do what they do on their own site for a client. I think you're pretty naive/ignorant to not realise this.

You have to keep all things in consideration, aesthetics, functionality, usability... each designer adds their own spin on what is allowable or not, but 9 times out of 10, if you in it for the business, the client will usually dictate that. They're the ones writing the checks. http://www.anchorpointdesignsd.com/
