bytecellar.com — "Apple II Forever" was the slogan, now you can help keep the dream alive if you've got a Mac OS X or Linux box and a vintage Apple II lying around. See rundown (with photos) of a 23yo Apple //c put to use as a functional text terminal (for IRC chatting), tied via custom serial cable (and through USB converter), to a Mac mini running OS X.

Ah, memories. When I was 12 years old, I worked at the local family market making $2/hr (+tips) bagging groceries. It took me the entire summer, but I saved up enough money to buy my first computer: an Apple ][c.That fall, I wrote my first program: ASCII Blackjack, written entirely in basic. That winter, the computer was destroyed when the old woman living above me left her bathtub running which overflowed and caved in the ceiling. Lost the blackjack code, too.I miss my Apple ][c. And I f**king hate old people.

I kind of ache for a cool "home computer" experience. I don't see why those guys who make joysticks that connect straight to your TV can't just make a 6502/65816 with a flash slot (MMC/SD) for a few dollars more. I guess upgradeable direct-to-TV gadgets have no market :(

To everyone jumping on me here and in linking blogs/news sites about calling it an Apple "//c" (as opposed to "IIc" or "][c" or whatever)...<a class="user" href="http://pix.blakespot.com/view/computers/apple2c/terminal/its_not_IIc.jpg.html">http://pix.blakespot.com/view/computers/apple2c/terminal/its_not_IIc.jpg.html</a>Sheeesh... :-)
