techradar.com— 20 best new features in OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard So you think Apple's new OS has little to offer? Think again,.

I use WMWare on the MacPro for Windows, Linux and FreeBSD emulation and they all run beautifully under Snow Leopard. If I want to run a 64 bit kernel by default it's a simple terminal command to do so, but at this stage there's really no need.Unlike Windows, the Snow Leopard 32 bit kernel can run 64 bit applications. Windows cannot do this so I can understand why Windows users have their panties in a knot about this non-issue.Apple have engineered a sensible way to offer the ability to run 64 bit apps and maintain compatibility with 32 bit drivers to accommodate hardware developers who may have been a bit slow in offering 32 bit drivers. It's a great upgrade and for $29 a steal IMHO.
@B1665rSo? Those fanboys suck too.I read the Apple stories because I'm genuinely interested in what new stuff they're coming out with. I may not buy it, and it may not impress me all that much sometimes, but I read them because it's always good to know what is being offered by ALL companies, so I can make an informed decision. Not so I can pick f**king teams so I feel like part of a "group".The only Apple stories I bury are the ones that say things like "Apple is better because...." because it's a relative thing. Something about new features? Hell no, I'm not going to bury it, that would be PETTY and f**kING LAME.I use Windows because it does what I want. But I *HAVE* looked at the Mac Minis now and then, and if I managed to find one at a good enough price, I might just pick one up. Not to "switch" or "think different", but so I can run BOTH and get the benefits out of BOTH packages.Computing does not have to be an either/or decision.
Thanks, MtheoryX.I'm not hating on OSX, almostadesigner, I LOVE MY MAC just the way it is. I was talking about Vista vs. XP -- on my PC. Install XP on my mac? When pigs fly, maybe.P.S. "too" hard.
@random12345You recommend it but you sound like you have never used it. Or even understand every about it. Leopard has received 8 service packs, Tiger has received 11, etc. FREE.And what users are claiming SL to be a complete new OS. Apple even told everyone that SL is the polishing of OSX Leopard. Everyone knows that. The June keynote, they even say its Leopard, now completely rewritten in 64 bit and as well as groundwork for the future advancements in the OS. And only costs $29.On the other hand Windows fanboys are claiming W7 as completely new, when it's a polish Vista. I had no problems with Vista, but yes W7 runs twice as fast as any previous Windows OS, and amazing on my iMac. It is the best Windows OS to date. But its still Vista, no matter how many fanboys refuse to believe it.
bkemper, wouldn't it be easier just say the phrase the correct goddamn way, instead of getting all defensive about it? You sound like the people who keep insisting that 'decimate' should actually mean 'obliterate', merely because ignorant people habitually misuse it. (Ironically enough, people usually misuse 'decimate' in a misguided attempt to "sound smart".) Personally, I refuse to surrender to morons. If what you mean is "you couldn't care less", then SAY it, for hell's sake. Don't say something that means the exact opposite, then whine about it.
My only gripe moving from windows to osx is that finder sorts everything by name, or whatever you use to sort it, but I prefer the way explorer presents all the subfolders at the top, sorted alphabetically, then files below.I've had to resort to naming my directories with ~ and such in front to get them to the top, but it is annoying. If I could change that I would........anyone?....anyone?...Bueller?...Bueller?...
"If you black box, test, and document, I suspect you will come to the conclusion you were wrong."I just did another search for this problem, and got my own comment on here as a result. For your information, I went through an exhaustive explanation with the three techs I spoke to about this issue and none of them would even acknowledge the possibility that it could be a problem with 10.6. This even after I mentioned that I was experiencing the exact same problem as at least a few other people. I did three fresh installs of 10.5 and 10.6. The problem came back each time 10.6 was installed and disappeared completely whenever 10.5, at any update level, was installed. Here's the Apple discussion post about the issue. As you can see, I am not alone.http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID= ...
