I purchased a new ultraportable notebook just a few months ago instead of a netbook for a few good reasons. My ultraportable has a dedicated graphics card so it can play 1080p video files while the netbook struggled to play it, I need a DVD drive often and an external is not an option for someone on the go a lot. The ultraportable notebook I got also has 802.11N dual-band, and bluetooth, a webcam, 1280x800 13.3" LED backlit LCD, gigabit ethernet (which I DO use while at my desk to connect to my gigabit network and my server), finger scanner, Vista Ultimate, 4GB of RAM 320GB HDD, 5.5-6 hours of battery life with standard battery, they do make a 9-cell battery for my notebook, and it weighs 3.8lbs. Core 2 Duo @ 2.1GHz. I got it for $1300.00, which is not bad for how much it packs. It also plays most games I have thrown at it very well. This includes WoW, Team Fortress 2, Half Life 2, Crysis, and Flatout 2. Netbooks are really for people that surf the internet and check e-mail, if you do anything with video or lots of music a full notebook would be better.
MacBook Air is NOT a netbook, it's an ultraportable that has a large LED backlit screen and a full size keyboard (also backlit). The iPhone and iPod Touch, however DO compete with netbooks with a few caveats :1. screen is much smaller (this may be a plus)2. on screen keyboard is not something you would want to use to type more than a few sentences. For Apple to compete in the netbook category they would also need to compete with the low margins and low prices.Apple's version of a netbook would (possibly) be an inflated iPod Touch (say 10" screen) with hand writing recognition options on top of the standard on-screen keyboard.
People, there will NEVER be an Apple netbook! Apple has to maintain their image of quality and perfection. Netbooks are a race to the bottom - exactly what Apple has done a great job avoiding.
So you want a Netbook that has all the notoriously battery-consuming parts (dual-core CPU, discrete GPU, big screen), but you also want 7 hours of battery life. Do we not see a problem here?

Really? What models? I want model numbers and release dates. My point again was that Apple computers are not made of "off-the-shelf" parts.
