eff.org — For the 2009 rulemaking, EFF filed three exemption requests with the Copyright Office today aimed at protecting the important work of video remix artists, iPhone owners, and cell phone recyclers from legal threats under the DMCA.

That's fine and good, but I'd rather EFF challenged the constitutionality of the DMCA altogether. Let's take it to the Supreme Court!

Screw copyrights. What would the music industry be without them? :-)

DMCA is so abused, that now there are companies suing local fans using DMCA violation for contents that are not even licensed locally in the area/country. IMO, instead of trying to put band-aids on the tumor, why don't just remove it? I prefer that lawmakers ditch DMCA altogether and start over with more input from the public and EFF. Alas, the public doesn't really care. Ask anybody on the street, and they wouldn't have a clue what DMCA is. When lawsuits are happening, even the digg community only responded by "whatever, let's all download the torrents." In reality, copyright laws is only going to get worse simply because the public doesn't really care.As for jailbreaking iPhones, instead of doing exceptions like this, we should simply have a law that prohibit carrier-locked phones, period. Locking cellphones is anti-competitive in the first place, and should be illegal. Carriers can still have exclusive phones, but the phones themselves should not be carrier/hardware-locked. Of course, the problem is Americans love paying for locked phones, which is mind boggling in the first place. What the EFF does is great, but the public couldn't care less. Most people still think the solution of the copyright problem is to download torrents, so I don't see anything is going to improve, especially with the amount of politicians in bed with the industry still getting votes.

I used to buy a lot of DVDs, but since I split my time between the US and Europe, I found that half my discs wouldn't play on my Powerbook. Apple only lets you switch regions five times (though the studios actually say you're allowed to do this 25 times -- Apple actually imposes more restrictions than it has to), so I quickly ran out of region-switches and just gave up on DVDs for a while. Thanks, DVD Converter Suite for Mac, for giving me back the access to my property that the MPAA and Apple took away.
