hungryforamonth.blogspot.com— How this guy ate for $1/day for the entire month. Personally, I think that there are healthier AND cheaper ways of eating for $30 a month, but this is still a great read. Enjoy!

It's not really unhealthy. My brother in law found he had diabetes. He started eating nothing but rice and vegetables with peanut butter sandwiches for lunch. He lost a lot of weight and keeps his diabetes under control by eating that way. Many people from China, Japan, the Philippines eat vegetables and grains as their main diet. They have long healthy lives. I'm very healthy. My doctor highly approves of my diet. I eat mostly rice, tuna, tilapia, salmon, turkey, different kinds of noodles and a variety of veggies.
I had a roomie that was unemployed that survived on about the same amount of cash...all i can say is a bag and an all you can eat pizza buffet...granted i had no problem helping out at times...but that was my starving artist period heh.charities like the salvation army have awesome buying power and can often get meat and other items at 10 cent a pound or so...so its often much more usefull to give cash rather than that old can of green beans
I'm working in China on a 2 year assignment. The local villagers near our housing compound in suburban Beijing have it figured out. Eating more communally allows them to combine resources to have tasty, healthy meals for around .25 a day. We, on the other hand, pay exorbitant prices for western foods - $6 for a box of fruit loops, $8 for a small bag of german muesli or $3 for a can of soup. At first we protested by not buying any of it but over time, you crave the comforts of home and need a little fix.The only concession is that eating Chinese at nicer restaurants costs about 1/4 of what it would in the US and Tsingtao is only 15 cents for a big bottle.
I've only been a vegan for a little over 10 months (1 year experiment just to see if I could do it). Yes, I totally agree that it costs a ton more than not being a vegan. Vegan-friendly food are $$$. Also, I find that I eat more as a vegan. I could probably bring the costs down to $200. I really didn't think much about it until I stumbled upon this post. :/Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.
I would add one multivitamin a day which should cost less than 5 cents per day. It's hard to get 100% of your daily vitamin/mineral requirements without a lot of variety (which can be costly)
Are you saying this is for 3 meals a day or just 1 meal a day for 4 people for one month? Any idea what foods they provide in these boxes?Any idea where they get these foods like a food surplus program or some other type program? My sons church need some ideas for their monthly food giveaway to the needy and this sounds like a better idea and then they could provide food for free for those that have no job or money and don't qualify for food stamps to buy food.
