ecogeek.org — Chances are you live in one of the 40 per cent of American households that owns at least one video game console. The Wii, XBox 360and Playstation3 all consume vastly different amounts of power but, all together, gaming consoles eat up enough energy to power the city of San Diego.

The people wasting power are the 50% of owners who don't power it down...ever.However, the same can be said for any light in the house that doesn't get shut off when not being used.

How many of you actually read the article? It said $1 Billion are being wasted because people don't turn off their gaming systems when done. It even clearly said the power spent when the console is actually being used it is "totally worth it".

I don't know what your smoking but saying "EVERYBODY" has 100 watt lightbulbs at home is like saying "EVERYBODY" owns a PS3 - I don't think I've had a 100 watt lightbulb in my house since well over a decade now. In fact I'm pretty sure most people use a "standard" 60 watt bulb.

I have almost every appliance in my house plugged into various $7 powerstrips with on/off switches. How many clocks do I need in the house after all? We turn off the appliances including the WII and the wireless router when not in use and it saves us about $25 a month. That is real money and it adds up and I'm being part of the solution instead of the problem in the process. That's a win-win situation and I like those! The point of this article, I think, is that we can be aware of the situation and do something simple yet constructive in response to it. I don't think the article suggests we need to stop playing games nor does it suggest the solution is to burn gasoline instead of electricity. I believe we can conserve scarce resources (gasoline and coal and natural gas) and limit our waste products by being informed and responsible and while continuing to have a good time.Cheers!

I agree with you, but I think the article was focused on the power that's used when no one's playing. The systems don't shut off completely and therefore, continue to drain power from the grid.

I recycle and pay my power bill. Why shouldn't I have the right to consume energy for entertainment. It's not like I am just leaving all my appliances on just to waste energy. I don't like the loaded title.
