dailymail.co.uk — "A typical working parent spends just 19 minutes a day looking after their children, official figures revealed yesterday. The startling research shows the devastating impact that working full-time has on children who hardly see their parents. "

People who read Digg tend to... read Digg. In other words, we spend our time on the internet while those less versed in the medium tend to allocate more time to TV.

I have read plenty of research that suggests kids appreciate hard working parents and think that the amount of time they get to spend with their parents is enough. The comments tagged on the actual story I think were very indicative of the type of person the article was directed at!

Man I must wrack up at least 19 minutes during the night turning the little bugger back over every time he rolls onto his front and gets stuck.-

Found the source! It's page 58 (if you look at the actual page numbering) or page 69 in PDF terms of the PDF linked off this page from the ONS. Ah hell, just look for table 5.11.http://www.statistics.gov.uk/cci/article.asp?id=1600In the footnote, it describes how the average time spent is calculated, which DOES include people WITHOUT children. der dee der der."Average time by those who participated in the activity = (average time per day for all people/ proportion of people who participated in the activity) * 100"

I think most of you who claim to either be a working parent with plenty of time with your kid, or a kid that gets to spend enough time with your parents are living a more ideal life than most. More and more, the old 9-5 job is disappearing. More commonly, is the situation where the child might go off to school at 8:00am and the parent heads to work at 3:00pm, getting home at 11:00p, maybe in time to tuck the kid in bed or say "hi" while they're sleeping. Day after day. Slaves.

That, and the article referred to direct and indirect time. I think a lot of people missed that. In other words, a lot of people spend time with their kids it's just not 100% interacting with them. (Not agreeing with the article necessarily, just making a point about the interpretation of it)
