digitimes.com — Apple is planning to introduce 15.4-inch MacBooks in the second quarter of 2007, according to industry sources in Taiwan. The new model will fill the gap between the company?s 13.3-inch MacBooks and the 15.4- and 17-inch MacBook Pros in its current notebook line up, and is expected to boost shipments of Apple?s Intel-powered MacBooks in 20007.

So, let's see....Take a 13.3" MacBook, add a 15.4" display at 1440x900, a discrete graphics chip... and you have a *MacBook Pro*.The whole point of having a 15.4" MacBook is to have something reasonably cheaper, which means it will have to make a few sacrifices. FW800, backlit keyboard, and ExpressCard/34 isn't enough. The GMA in the current MacBooks is pretty decent for integrated. It can play WoW just fine at 1440x900, for example. It's definitely no powerhouse, though. Intel's upcoming integrated graphics for the Santa Rosa chipset is supposed to be *much* better. But yeah, if you want dedicated video, you'll have to buy a MacBook Pro. If you want a higher res (and significantly more expensive) screen, you'll have to buy a MacBook Pro.

I bought my macbook last month and couldn't care less about not getting one with a 15" monitor. When I think of portability, I think smaller = better. If I am doing a lot of work on my computer, I am at home with hooked up to my 24" monitor. When I am at school, I want my notebook computer to be small, light, and quiet. Some guy in the library had a laptop that sounded like he was vacuuming. That's when I realized how quiet my macbook is. I digress.Point is, sometimes less is more.

My first Mac was an 1.4Ghz iBook G4 14". It was December of 05, and the hardware was outdated and it looked like they wouldn't be coming out with anything better for a while (The switch to Intel was supposed to take a year, and I figured they would update the high end users 1st). The only reason I bought it was b/c It would get me into the mac OS, it had a big screen, and it was a baseline mac WITH A VIDEO CARD. I'm still using it and it's never given me a problem. I just hope 10.5 doesn't render it useless.

I'll still only be able to afford the 13".

Clean install on MBP - C2D 2.33 w/ 2G RAM and 256MB X1600 video card - I was getting around 25-30fps with medium settings 75% view stuff in the distance (mobs). Default TBC clean install I was getting between 45 and 60 fps, but the view mob distance was horrible and I was running into aggro management issues.I have been used to a AMDx24600+, 2G ram, X800 pro system w/ everything maxed getting 45-60fps on windows. And found the OS X stuff to be dissapointing - need to compare Vista to OS X on the MBP and see if there be a system limitation or a config issue in OS X to investigate.

I can also see them offering the MacBook in more colors.

I'm looking forward to this. If the 15.4 inch comes out hopefully the 13.3 inch will go down in price. I wouldn't mind having a bigger screen on a MacBook but I think the 13 inches are great can't wait to get either!
